Vanity Publishers Are Not All The Same
Vanity publishing is similar to self publishing in that it allows the writer to maintain a degree of control over the production process. Vanity publishers will complete the process on your behalf whilst still allowing you to retain ownership of your manuscript.
So essentially you give them the manuscript, and they will do the editing and proofreading; typesetting; printing; and instead of paying for all of these steps individually, they will charge you one all encompassing fee which will including a service fee premium.
While some vanity publishers do a fantastic job and offer an alternative way to get published, there are some vanity publishers that are not reputable and may overcharge naïve authors significantly.
Some things you need to know about vanity publishers:
They can save you time
If you are someone who wants to self publish and has the money to, but lacks the time to undertake such a large process then a vanity publisher can be the right publishing choice for you. You also get the added experience of vanity publishers who can employ many specialists to undertake the individual steps that form the entire process.
…and money
If you were to self publish one individual book, then outsourcing professions such as an editor to complete a one-off publication can be expensive. As vanity publishers regularly engage the services of these specialists they can often arrange better deals that can save you money in the end.
But may charge you too much
Sometimes unethical vanity publishers may massively inflate the price to publish your book. So something that may cost you $8,000 to complete via self publishing may cost you $15,000 or more through a vanity publisher. Unfortunately, there are a number of recorded incidences where this has occurred, thus tainting the reputation of vanity publishers but understand not all are the same.
Good vanity publishers do exist
If you decide to go with a vanity publisher then make sure you do your research. Look for vanity publishers with books in bookstores; check out past authors and call them and ask for references. Ask about their experience, the fees, any hidden costs, and exactly what is received for their fees. It is also important to be weary of vanity publishers from overseas because the price of your book may rise as a result of high delivery fees.
The bottom line: do your research! Only when you do your research can you make an informed decision. Publishing can be an expensive project if you don't have all of the information. However, if you do it right it can be the best experience of your life!
