How Publish A Book - Preparation
Getting published is not just about writing a book. Publishing goes beyond writing and with so many different avenues of publishing, this process offers more opportunities which means more decisions need to be made. Before getting published it is important to thoroughly research your options.
1. Know the different publishing options
There are seven different publishing options available to aspiring authors: major publishers, specialised publishers, self publishers, co-authorships, vanity publishers, literary agents, and eBooks. All of these options have there advantages and disadvantages and not all of them are suited to everyone. When you are looking at your options work out which publishing avenue suits your objectives best.
2. Book publishers want 'good talent'
Once upon a time, book publishers only looked for manuscripts that were appealing and well-written. Today, they look for so much more. They're no longer just looking for well-written manuscripts but also authors that are marketable and can potentially produce future titles. This is what the industry calls 'good talent'. Authors with 'good talent' work with the marketing and publicity department to utilise their own contacts to sell their book and they have an interesting background or a unique angle.
3. Think about pre-selling your book
A great way to achieve success for your book is to sell as many as you can before the book is released. If you are funding the book production process yourself, this means that you can cover costs before your book even goes to print. For major publishers, pre-selling is an indication that your book will successfully sell and instils confidence in their decision to invest in your book's production.
In summary, Knowing the various publishing options, becoming 'good talent' and learning about pre-selling are only few of the many things you need to know about getting published. Traditionally, people believed that major publishers were our only avenue for publishing, however, this is no longer the case. Publishing options are a lot more diverse and aspiring authors need to research the many options if they want to get published.
